May ended up being one of our favorite times to visit Japan. The weather was comfortable, getting dressed was easy, and we didn’t need nearly as many layers as we expected.

What surprised us most was how often we repeated the same outfits. These are the exact outfits we actually wore in Japan in May and what worked for long walking days, changing temperatures, and day-to-night plans.

If you’re planning your trip for a different time of year, we’ve also shared exactly what we wore in other seasons:

Each guide shows real outfits and what actually worked for us.

What We Actually Wore the Most in Japan in May

These ended up being the most reliable pieces in our suitcase and the ones we would pack again without overthinking it:

We packed more variety than we needed, but we naturally gravitated toward outfits that were comfortable, simple, and easy to repeat.

Quick Packing Summary for May in Japan

Day-to-Night Outfits That Actually Worked in Japan

We were worried that the temperatures would change drastically from day to night, but it wasn’t too bad at all. Crystal wore her black jean jacket, tights, and shorts day to night and was comfortable. They worked during the day and still felt right at night.

I wore my trench coat and threw my light cardigan underneath. This was warm enough for me when roaming through the streets of Shinjuku at night.

If we had to recreate these day-to-night outfits, these are the exact types of pieces we would pack again.

Casual Daytime Outfits for Walking Around Japan

I tend to wear jeans because I’m always worried about being cold, even when I probably don’t need to be. Crystal likes to wear tights underneath her skirt or dresses and this worked out perfectly for this time of year. For footwear, Crystal’s go-to was her Dr. Martens and I switched between my Adidas Sambas and Mary Jane flats.

These are the pieces we found ourselves reaching for over and over again during long walking days, and the ones we would pack again without overthinking it.

Light Layers You’ll Actually Need in Japan in May

We ended up relying on light layers almost every single day, even when it felt warm. Even though it was warm during the day, mornings, evenings, and shaded areas felt cooler than expected. Having a light jacket in the cooler mornings worked out great and it wasn’t too hot to remove it, so there really wasn’t a moment where we had to remove our outer layers and walk around with them in hand.

These were the layering pieces that made the biggest difference for staying comfortable throughout the day.

Slightly More Put-Together Outfits (When You Want to Look Nice)

Nothing too dressy, just a bit more styled. This is also where we got the most compliments and felt the most put together in photos. When it got too warm I tied a light cardigan around my shoulders without it making my outfit look messy. I would say it actually gave it a more sophisticated vibe.

When we wanted to look more put together for photos or nicer areas, these are the pieces that made the biggest difference.

What to Wear on Travel Days in Japan

We knew we would be going up and down train station stairs, navigating luggage, and walking more than usual, so comfort mattered more than anything. This was one of the few times we prioritized function over style, but it still worked out for both.

These are the exact types of pieces we relied on for travel days when comfort mattered most, especially with all the walking, stairs, and luggage.

Looking back, we would have packed:

  • More dresses or skirts since they worked for both day and night

  • Fewer “just in case” pieces we never ended up wearing

  • Even more light layers because we used them every single day

If we had to pack for Japan in May again, without overthinking it, these are the exact pieces we would bring:

If you’re trying to pack light, this is one of the easiest months to do it. We ended up wearing the same outfits more than we expected, and it made getting dressed every day much easier.

How Much the Weather Can Change in May

After we left Tokyo, we spent the remainder of our trip in our hometown of Narita, and the weather changed more than we expected.

From May 12 to May 16, we had sunny skies and temperatures that were about 10 degrees warmer than the week before.

This just shows how quickly the weather can shift in Japan, even within the same month. This is exactly why we relied so heavily on light layers throughout the trip.

Planning outfits for multiple seasons in Japan can feel overwhelming, especially with how quickly the weather changes. If your trip spans multiple months or you’re still deciding when to go, check out our other outfit guides to compare what actually worked:
