June ended up being very different than we expected.
We knew it was Japan’s rainy season, but it didn’t rain nearly as much as we thought. Instead, we experienced a mix of cloudy days, light rain, and warm temperatures that felt comfortable most of the time.
After traveling to Japan during different spring months, June felt like a transition between spring and summer. We traveled around Japan and visited Narita, Nagoya, and the Osaka area between May 31st through June 9th.
Instead of sharing what we thought we would wear, this is exactly what we actually wore in Japan in June. This is what worked for walking, mild humidity, and occasional rain.
If you’re visiting Japan during a different time of year, we’ve shared what we actually wore across multiple seasons:
• What to Wear in Japan in March (cooler days + layering)
• What to Wear in Japan in April (mild weather, easy outfits)
• What to Wear in Japan During Cherry Blossom Season
• What to Wear in Japan in September (warm + humid)
• What to Wear in Japan in October (cooler fall weather)
What We Actually Wore the Most in Japan in June
Looking back, these were the pieces we kept reaching for:
Comfortable walking shoes
Stretchy Jeans
Cohesive basic tops
We packed for warmer, humid weather, but ended up wearing more balanced outfits that worked for both warm days and light rain.
June is the start of Japan’s rainy season, which typically brings warm temperatures, mild humidity, and intermittent rain showers rather than constant downpours.
That’s why outfits that could handle both light rain + fluctuating temperatures worked best.
Outfits That Worked Day to Night
Since we were out exploring and walking around from day to night, we needed to dress in comfortable layers. These were the styles that work great for easy, weather-ready layering.
We kept coming back to outfits with:
A light rain jacket or trench
Comfy stretchy bottoms
All-day walking shoes
They worked during the day and still felt comfortable at night. Make sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little wet if you happen to run into some light rain.
This ended up being one of our most repeated outfit formulas.
Shop Our Look:
Light jacket or trench coat (easy to layer for rain and cooler moments)
Jeans (denim with some stretch is a must for us)
Short sleeve top or light button-down top
Comfortable walking shoes (you’ll be walking a lot)
A versatile bag (the Aoyama bag is our favorite)
Casual Daytime Outfits for Walking Around Japan
Most days were spent wandering through the busy streets of Osaka, taking in the neon signs, crowded sidewalks, and lively neighborhoods. If it wasn’t cloudy, the sun made the city pleasantly warm. On sunny afternoons a jacket wasn’t necessary; a short-sleeve top was perfectly comfortable for exploring.

Jeans or wide-leg pants (comfortable for long walking days)
T-shirt
Sneakers (definitely need flat shoes)
For shoes, we both stuck with sneakers almost the entire trip. When you’re walking all day, nothing else really compares.
Rainy Days in Japan: What Actually Worked
Even though it didn’t rain constantly, we still had enough rainy moments to figure out what actually works.
Light rain jackets ended up being one of the most useful things we packed. They were easy to throw on when needed and light enough to carry when we didn’t.
We also noticed that having the right layers mattered more than we expected. It was never cold, but the combination of rain and humidity made lightweight layers ideal.

Lightweight rain jacket with hood (easy to pack and carry)
To stay hands-free, Crystal prefers a lightweight hooded jacket. It’s perfect for light rain when an umbrella can get in the way of large crowds.

Slightly More Put-Together Outfits (When You Want to Look Nice)
For certain days, especially when we knew we’d be taking photos or going to nicer areas, we wanted to feel a little more put together.
Nothing too dressy, just slightly more styled.
Crystal wore a simple black dress layered with a denim or lightweight top, and I leaned into structured tops with jeans.
These outfits still felt comfortable but looked more intentional.

These were perfect for when we wanted to elevate our outfits without sacrificing comfort.
Travel Day Outfits
For travel days, we kept things simple and comfortable.
We knew we would be walking through train stations, carrying luggage, and moving around a lot, so comfort mattered more than anything.
We both wore outfits that were easy to move in and didn’t require adjusting throughout the day.
Shop Our Look:
Comfortable outfit (stretchy jeans)
Lightweight jacket
These were the outfits we didn’t have to think about at all.
What We Would Pack Differently
Looking back, we would have packed:
Fewer tank tops
More lightweight cardigans
We expected June to feel much hotter and more humid, but most days were comfortable enough for jeans and a short sleeve top.
What We Didn’t Wear (And Why)
We ended up not wearing:
Shorts
Tank tops
Sandals
We assumed it would be much hotter, but the weather didn’t require it.
Instead, outfits with light layers and comfortable shoes worked best for almost every situation.
