April is one of the most beautiful times to visit Japan, but figuring out what to wear can be surprisingly tricky.
The weather changes a lot throughout the day:
Mornings & nights: chilly
Afternoons: mild and comfortable
Rain: very possible (we experienced quite a bit on this trip)
After multiple trips to Japan in the spring, we’ve learned that the key is layering and packing versatile pieces you can rewear. This post focuses on real outfits and what we actually wore. Need a full packing checklist? Read our Tokyo Spring Packing List.
Below are the exact outfits we wore, what worked, and what we’d pack again.
What We Actually Wore the Most
If you only pack a few things for Japan in April, make it these:
OUR MOST-WORN ITEMS:
Lightweight sweater → wore this almost daily
Oversized button-down shirt → perfect layering piece
Sweatshirt → a go-to for rainy and colder days
Comfortable walking shoes → 15,000–20,000 steps per day
Ankle boots → best option for rainy days
Wide-leg pants → comfortable + easy to style
Tote bag → carried more than expected (especially in the rain)
These were the foundation of almost every outfit.
Outfit 1: Casual Day Exploring Tokyo
🛍️ Shop This Outfit:
Oversized button-down (similar)
Lightweight sweater (exact)
Wide-leg pants (similar)
Sneakers (exact)
⭐ Why This Works:
Easy to layer as temps change
Comfortable for long walking days
Neutral pieces = easy to mix and match
📍 Where We Wore This:
Akihabara, Shinjuku, and full days walking around Tokyo
We wore versions of this outfit multiple times because it was so easy and reliable.
Outfit 2: Rainy Day in Tokyo
April in Japan isn’t just cherry blossom season. It’s also unpredictable weather, and we ended up experiencing some rain on this trip.
On rainy days, we found ourselves reaching for cozier layers, and this outfit combination worked really well.
🛍️ Shop This Outfit:
Lightweight trench coat or rain jacket (my go-to on rainy days)
Sweatshirt (exact or similar)
Straight-leg or wide-leg pants (exact)
Ankle boots (water-resistant or leather works best)
Large tote bag (fits everything you need)
Compact umbrella (must-have)
⭐ Why This Works:
Sweatshirt adds warmth without bulk
Ankle boots handled rain much better than sneakers
Tote bag fits umbrella + extra layers
Light outer layer keeps you dry without overheating
📍 Where We Wore This:
Tokyo on rainy days + light, on-and-off showers
💡 Rain Tip (Based on Experience):
We thought we’d want a crossbody bag, but we actually used a tote bag way more because it fit:
A compact umbrella
Extra layers
Anything we picked up during the day
This made a big difference when it was raining.
Quick Tip:
You can grab umbrellas anywhere in Japan, including 7-Eleven Japan or FamilyMart, but having one already in your bag is much easier.
What We’d Do Again:
Pack a sweatshirt specifically for rainy days
Bring ankle boots instead of sneakers when rain is expected
Use a tote bag
Carry a compact umbrella
Outfit 3: Coffee Shops + Shopping Day
🛍️ Shop This Outfit:

If you want to simplify packing, this is what we recommend:
TOPS
2 lightweight sweaters
1 sweatshirt
2 layering tops
OUTERWEAR
1 light jacket or trench
1 cardigan or blazer
BOTTOMS
1–2 pants
1 dress or skirt
SHOES
1 walking sneaker
1 ankle boot (for rain)
ACCESSORIES
Tote bag
Compact umbrella
Everything should mix and match easily.
Weather in Japan in April
~50–65°F
Cool mornings and evenings
Mild afternoons
Occasional rain
The biggest mistake is not planning for rain.
What I Would NOT Pack
Heavy coats → too bulky
Heels → not practical
Too many single-use outfits
Stick to versatile pieces you can rewear.
