Tokyo is one of the most exciting cities in the world, but deciding where to stay in Tokyo can feel overwhelming for first-time visitors. With so many neighborhoods, from the neon streets of Shibuya to the upscale shopping district of Ginza, each area offers a completely different experience.

Since we visit Japan often and have stayed in several areas of Tokyo, we’ve put together this guide to the best areas to stay in Tokyo for tourists, along with the hotels we personally recommend in each neighborhood. Whether you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time or planning a return trip, these are the areas that offer the best location, transportation access, and overall experience.

Best Areas to Stay in Tokyo for First-Time Visitors

1. Shibuya – Best Overall Location for First Timers

Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is probably our favorite choice thus far among the various options we have explored during our travels in Tokyo. When we arrived at Shibuya station, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that we didn’t have to exit the station to access the lobby of our hotel directly.

The hotel boasted a fantastic view of the iconic Shibuya crossing, which added to the overall charm of our stay. The rooms were not only spacious but also elegantly designed, providing a comfortable atmosphere. Throughout our experience, we found it hard to think of any complaints regarding this excellent accommodation.

Everywhere we turned in the city, there were charming cafes, lively bars, exciting karaoke joints, and thrilling game centers packed with fun and entertainment, all vying for our attention. The sheer abundance of choices was almost overwhelming, creating a challenge in deciding how to spend our time in a place where the possibilities seemed truly endless.

2. Ginza – Best for Luxury Hotels and Shopping

AC Hotel Ginza Tokyo by Marriott is a modern and stylish accommodation option located in the vibrant Ginza district. This hotel offers guests a central location, making it easy to explore the area's renowned shopping, dining, and entertainment options. With a contemporary spacious design and a range of amenities, we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay during our time here.

One of our favorite amenities during our stay was the private in-room massage service that can be conveniently requested for a reasonable fee. This luxurious option was a fantastic way to wind down and relax after a long, exhausting day of walking around and exploring the city.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay here. Our room was modern, clean, and very spacious. Housekeeping was very attentive and replenished anything that we used, so we always had plenty of towels, water, coffee pods, etc.

The Conrad Tokyo hotel in Japan is probably the most luxurious hotel we have ever stayed at. Although the hotel address is technically Shiodome, that area sits right next to Ginza and is commonly grouped with it in travel guides. Everything about this hotel was top notch and we were impressed with just about everything the hotel had to offer. Right from the start, when we arrived, they made us feel like we were very important guests of theirs.

We were truly sad to leave Conrad Tokyo because we loved it so much, and the exceptional service made us feel like royalty throughout our entire stay. The exquisite amenities and attention to detail further enhanced our experience, making it a place we will always cherish.

3. Shinjuku – Best for Nightlife

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hotel is conveniently situated within just a short five-minute walk from JR Shinjuku station. This massive train station, known for its complexity, has multiple exits and is surrounded by tons of shops, attractions, and an endless variety of restaurants to explore.

The hotel itself is perfectly positioned right next to a Lawson convenience store, making it incredibly easy to grab snacks or essentials. Additionally, we were also within a comfortable walking distance to the iconic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Deck, which provides stunning views of the cityscape.

Park Hyatt Tokyo Hotel is located in Nishi-Shinjuku and was featured in the indie film, Lost in Translation and who doesn’t love that movie with Bill Murray? Park Hyatt Tokyo is one of the most iconic luxury hotels in Tokyo, located in the skyscrapers of Shinjuku.

The service at this hotel was exceptional and every single staff member was polite and professional. When we needed something and called the front desk, they were at our door within minutes. We couldn't believe the ninja-like speed! They also provide a free shuttle service to Shinjuku station.

Park Hyatt Bathroom Tokyo — Luxurious and Spacious Bathroom

Our room was not only modern and clean but also impressively spacious, providing a comfortable atmosphere for our stay. The bathroom was stocked with an abundance of amenities, and had we been aware of this, we certainly would have opted to leave our toiletry bags at home. Additionally, if you’re a fan of whiskey, our room featured a mini bar with an exceptional selection of premium Japanese whiskey.

We thoroughly enjoyed every part of our stay at the Park Hyatt Tokyo. If you have a free night stay with your Hyatt points or want to splurge a little in Tokyo, we definitely recommend this hotel.

*This hotel went under a 19-month renovation and recently opened again in December 2025.

4. Odaiba – Best for Tokyo Bay Views

We chose to stay at Hilton Tokyo Odaiba one year because we had a variety of fun activities planned on our itinerary in the area of Odaiba. The location of this hotel could not have been more ideal, as we found ourselves right in the heart of everything, making it easy to walk to popular attractions such as Fuji TV and Diver City Tokyo Plaza.

Our room was quite spacious, and we were delighted to discover that it included a lovely patio where we could sit outside and take in the stunning views of the Tokyo skyline and the famous Rainbow Bridge.

Hilton Odaiba Two Queen Bedroom — Largy Comfy Beds

It’s a gorgeous hotel that features an inviting and beautifully decorated lounge, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all guests. Additionally, they also offer a thoughtful and convenient complimentary shuttle service for guests heading to the magical Tokyo Disneyland.

The room was stunning with a little hallway leading to the bedroom and large windows overlooking the city. The bathroom was the most gorgeous hotel bathroom we have ever seen with a large, round mirror and a Victorian-style bathtub that had a glass wall so that you could see the magnificent view of the city while you took a bath.

Tokyo Neighborhood Map (Understanding the Main Areas)

Tokyo is a massive sprawl of neighborhoods, but the JR Yamanote Line is your best friend for staying centered. This iconic green loop hits all the "must-see" districts, making it basically impossible to get lost. You’ll see the giant circle on any map; it takes an hour to ride the full loop, and trains come so often that missing one is no biggie. Trains run with clockwork frequency, though we recommend planning your departures around rush hour for a more relaxed and comfortable journey.

How to Choose Where to Stay in Tokyo

Tokyo is a huge city made up of many different neighborhoods, so choosing where to stay can make a big difference in how easy it is to get around. Before booking a hotel, we usually create a rough itinerary of the places we want to visit. This helps us narrow down the best neighborhood and makes sightseeing much easier.

Here are a few key things we always consider when choosing a hotel in Tokyo.

1. Proximity to Subway or JR stations

Tokyo’s public transportation system is incredibly efficient, and you’ll likely rely on trains and subways to get around the city. We always try to stay within a short walk of a major train station so it’s easy to explore different neighborhoods.

Hotels located near stations on the JR Yamanote Line are especially convenient because this loop line connects many of Tokyo’s most popular areas, including Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Tokyo Station.

2. Access To Major Stations

Some train stations in Tokyo serve as major transportation hubs with connections to multiple train and subway lines. Staying near one of these stations can save a lot of time when navigating the city.

Stations like Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Tokyo Station make it easy to travel across Tokyo and even take day trips to nearby destinations like Yokohama, Hakone, or Kyoto via the Shinkansen.

3. Walking Distance to Attractions

Another thing we consider is how walkable the area is. Some neighborhoods have many attractions, restaurants, and shops all within walking distance, which makes exploring much easier. Areas like Shibuya, Asakusa, and Ginza are great examples where you can step outside your hotel and immediately start exploring without needing to take a train.

We especially like to stay in hotels that are super close to convenient stores like 7-11 or Family Mart.

4. Hotel Prices by Neighborhood

Hotel prices in Tokyo can vary quite a bit depending on the neighborhood. Luxury districts like Ginza tend to have higher-end hotels, while areas like Asakusa often offer more affordable options.
