We were on a cross-country road trip from Florida to California and booked a stay in downtown Austin at Canopy by Hilton so that we would be close to many attractions Austin had to offer. It’s located right smack in the middle of various bars and eateries, so it is very lively here both day and night.

FIRST IMPRESSION

When we approached the entrance to the parking garage, we actually missed it the first time. It’s a bit hidden amongst all the other establishments in the area. This isn’t surprising since most downtowns in larger cities are like this.

The front desk was warm and inviting and we had a little issue upon check-in. Hilton recently started an automated upgrade for rewards members, which is great in some situations. We booked a two queen bedroom, but the upgrade changed our room to a one king bedroom. This isn’t ideal as we’d like to have our own bed, so we called before arrival to have our initial room.

Two Queen Bedroom

Unfortunately, this request was not noted as promised, so we had to again explain the situation at check-in. Luckily, there were still rooms available to revert back to our initial booking, and the on-site staff was very helpful and resolved the issue.

THE ROOM

Our 356 sq. ft. room was cozy, comfortable, and functional. The contemporary design of the bed’s wooden headboard was gorgeous and it had a bit of a traditional Japanese element to it.

The beds were super comfy with an option of either two soft plush pillows or two firm pillows. The gel memory foam beds helped us sleep like babies on both nights.

Gorgeous Headboard

Since the hotel is located in a lively part of downtown Austin, the noise level can be distracting at night. We requested a room away from the street to avoid the noise, so our room was facing the adjacent parking garage. This limited the noise; however, we did still hear some muffled noises through the night.

Workstation and TV

Nespresso Machine

Our room was equipped with a flat-screen tv, plenty of USB ports, a refrigerated door, a handheld steamer, and an in-room Nespresso machine. Oddly, the Nespresso machine was located in a spot where the outlet was not working, so we had to move the machine over to the bathroom sink’s outlet to use it.

Entryway

We really appreciated the entryway’s large bench and coat rack. There were plenty of hangers and a ton of space to place all of our luggage.

Cozy room with carpet

Gift basket with local goodies

We also received a nice gift bag that included a couple of Texas Maple Pecan granola bars and Big Swing sparkling water. We thought it was a nice touch to include local products from Austin.

Bathroom

The bathroom was spacious and we were surprised that the light was motion censored. This is so helpful especially at night when you can’t find the darn light switch. We love the large illuminated mirror and always appreciate when hotels provide a magnifying mirror as well. Having a well-lit bathroom is a huge plus for us since it makes it so much easier to apply our makeup.

Spacious shower

Greek House Toiletries

The sink was spacious so we had plenty of room to place our toiletries. They provided plenty of towels and basic toiletries. We weren’t a big fan of their toiletries as it was extremely difficult to squeeze the product out of bottles. The shower was spacious and the water pressure was average. The shower had difficulty draining water but other than that, it worked great.

Dog-Friendly

We were traveling with Kuma and the room came equipped with a dog bed (available upon request), bowls, and a mat for the bowls.

There was also a dedicated pet relief area located within the hotel property. This is extremely helpful especially if your pet has to relieve themselves in the middle of the night. The pet relief area is located on the third floor and it’s a nicely decorated area with a pet waste station.

AMENITIES

A fitness center, meeting rooms, and an outdoor pool are all available on-site. Since we had limited time in Austin, we didn’t get to enjoy all the amenities they had to offer.

ON-SITE RESTAURANT - VERBENA

We had dinner on our first night at Verbena and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was gorgeous and the service was prompt and friendly. We ordered the Three Cheese Flatbread, Westfield Farms Chicken, and 8 Lettuce Tossed Salad.

Three Cheese Flatbread

Hands down our favorite was the flatbread. For $10.00, the portion was very generous and the ingredients were fantastic. The flatbread was baked to perfection as it was crispy, light, and puffy. The pecorino, fontina, and smoked provolone were creamy, yet light and pleasant. We would have gladly paid $20.00 for it.

LOCATION

The hotel is located on West 6th Street, which is in the heart of the city’s business and entertainment district. We took full advantage of this and had had a couple of drinks at Parlor and Yard and The Roosevelt Room.

PARKING

We always prefer to self-park, but only valet was available for $50.00 per night. Luckily, they provided a great service called Flash Valet where you simply send a text when you need your car. Flash Valet immediately replies with an estimated time of when your vehicle will be ready.

We used this texting system multiple times throughout our stay and each time, we had our car ready within 5 minutes. We were pretty impressed with how fast they were able to grab our car.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There were a few things the Canopy in Downtown Austin can improve on but overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Canopy by Hilton Austin Downtown. Valet was great, the staff was attentive and friendly, and our room was cozy. We really appreciated the pet-friendliness and still can’t get over the amazing Three Cheese Flatbread at their on-site restaurant.
