I was going on a 5-day cross-country road trip with my dog, Kuma, and I needed to stop in between Houston and El Paso. After doing some research, Fort Stockton came up as an option and the Best Western Plus hotel had rave reviews on TripAdvisor; especially for being an excellent pet-friendly hotel.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The exterior of the hotel looked pretty nice and there was plenty of parking up front. The lobby area was small, but clean and had a couch, a few chairs, a fireplace and a TV.

A nice woman at the check-in desk greeted me and got me squared away in less than 5 minutes. She was very friendly with Kuma and gave us some puppy goodies that included treats and a waste bag. She also informed me that there was a nice fenced-in dog run area next to the hotel.

LOCATION

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, so you don’t have very many food options or activities nearby. I think a lot of visitors use this hotel as a road trip stop, like myself, or stay here for some sort of construction job in the county.

It’s located right next to Interstate 10, so you’ll hear cars and trucks whizzing by. It didn’t bother me much, but if this is something that you can’t handle, I would ask for a room that’s furthest away from the highway.

There was a restaurant next to the hotel, but it was closed. I couldn’t’ tell if it was permanently closed or shut down because of the pandemic. If you drive a couple of minutes down the road, there is a Burger King and a couple of gas stations.

It’s also about a 6-minute drive to the historic downtown. I’m not sure what’s available downtown, but it might be worth checking out if you want to explore a bit.

ROOM

My room was located on the first floor in Room #104. It was right around the corner from the lobby and steps away from the indoor pool. It was a pretty good size room with hardwood floors. Kuma seemed a little disappointed that there was no carpet (she really loves rubbing on carpet), but I understand that having wood floors is best for pet-friendly rooms because it’s easier to clean any accidents.

The room was a pretty decent size with a king-size bed, dresser, mini-fridge, microwave, TV, an accent chair, working desk, digital safe, iron, and ironing board. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable, but it wasn’t terrible either.

I wasn’t too fond of the location my room was in. Since it was next to the indoor pool, I constantly heard kids running down the hallways and doors being slammed. Since Kuma is a guard dog, she would bark at every little sound and it was driving me nuts. Luckily, the noise calmed down around 10 pm.

I loved that they decorated the bathroom specifically for pet owners. There was a funny Tupac portrait of a dog and cute cat shower curtains.

There was plenty of counter space at the sink and they provided nice toiletries from Pharmacopia including a bar of soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. They also provided a shower cap and makeup remover. Next to the toiletries was the coffee maker with coffee, tea, cream, and sugar.

The shower was fine, but the shower pressure was a little weak. The water temperature was nice and hot, so it didn’t bother me that the shower pressure was low. I always choose hot water over poor water pressure.

AMENITIES

There is a business center next to the lobby, but I didn’t use it. Across from the business center is a bar and dining area. This is where you will get your complimentary breakfast and dinner. Yes, free dinner!

Complimentary breakfast is pretty common in most hotels, but I don’t think I’ve ever stayed at a hotel where they offered complimentary dinner. The menu changes daily and on the night I was there, they offered lasagna, green beans, watermelon, and nachos. It was all very good.

Indoor pool

There is an indoor pool on the first floor and although I did not take advantage of it, I did see a couple of families enjoying the pool.

WiFi is free and worked great. For a remote area, it was very speedy. I was watching some YouTube videos with no streaming problems.

PET-FRIENDLINESS

Out of all my hotel stays on the cross-country road trip I was on, this was the most pet-friendly accommodation. They gifted dog treats and they also have a jar of dog treats in the lobby for the dogs so they can have one anytime they’d like. Too bad Kuma has a sensitive tummy, so she wasn’t able to enjoy those.

The room also comes equipped with a dog bowl and a puppy pad in case your dog is still in training or has accidents. Plus, they make the room extra special for pet owners by adding a cute animal theme in the bathroom.

The best part was the fenced-in dog run area. The hotel actually built this so the dogs could enjoy some freedom in the grass without a leash and that was so thoughtful of them. Kuma especially enjoyed this and immediately did some zoomies when I let her off the leash.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Despite a couple of hiccups with the noise and average bed comfort, the positives far outweighed the minor cons. The cost of this hotel was only $97 per night and that’s INCLUDING the pet fee, which was $20. For everything you get at this hotel, that is a bargain! If you are traveling with your pet, this is the hotel to stay at.
