I rarely stay at bed and breakfast accommodations, but I thought I would try something different instead of staying in a typical hotel.

I was traveling with my dog, Kuma, on a cross-country road trip from California to Florida and Book Nook Inn looked like a lovely place for a stopover. Technically, the inn is located in Lumberton, Texas, which is 15 minutes north of Beaumont.

ABOUT BOOK NOOK INN

Book Nook Inn is owned by David and Stacie Hearne, who are both avid readers and love literature. So much so that David has even written and published a few books.

David used to live in California years ago and moved to Texas to continue his business. He and his wife, Stacie, always dreamed of having a bed and breakfast and they finally made it happen in 2013.

FIRST IMPRESSION

Kuma and I were welcomed by David when we arrived and he gave me instructions on how to open the main door and then showed me to my room.

After I placed some of my luggage down, he explained the property a little more and asked what time I would like breakfast. They usually serve breakfast at 9AM, but since I wanted to leave earlier than that, I asked to have my breakfast at 8AM.

We chatted for a bit and then told me that he had a dog as well. A cute labradoodle named Harvey. He talked about how unbelievably smart Harvey was and how he could do many tricks.

He asked if Kuma could do tricks as well, so of course, Kuma had to show off some of her tricks to David. He was very impressed and asked if she would jump through hoops as well since that’s what Harvey likes to do.

We went to the dining area and David brought Harvey out so the two dogs could meet. Kuma did some hoop jumps for David and he gave her lots of treats and attention, which made Harvey a little jealous. I could tell Harvey adored David as much he did.

LOCATION

As mentioned earlier, Book Nook Inn is located in Lumberton, Texas, which is 15 minutes north of Beaumont and 1 hour east of Houston. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Interstate 10.

There are several restaurants around the inn (with average reviews) that’s about a 7-minute drive, but not very many choices. If you want a variety of restaurants to choose from, you will have to drive into Beaumont to get some food. I did not feel like driving anywhere, so I decided to eat my cup ramen in the room.

THE ROOM

Book Nook Inn has five different rooms and I chose to stay in the Deluxe King Room which was called the Lyndsey Room. It was a very spacious room with a private bathroom, king bed, refrigerator, microwave and a Keurig coffee machine.

The room is filled with all sorts of antique collections like the telephone, cabinet, chair, dining table and more. The bed was very comfortable, but I didn’t really get a good night’s rest because Kuma kept on wanting to go out of the room to find David and see if she could score some more treats.

On top of the microwave, there were various complimentary treats like cookies and crackers and also some soda and water in the fridge. I had some coffee in the morning using the Keurig, but I had a bit of a struggle trying to find an outlet for the machine.

It was originally unplugged and placed on the dining table and there are no outlets nearby, so I had to move the Keurig on top of the microwave and use the outlet there to make some coffee.

There is also a large closet where you can store your luggage and plenty of hangers to hang up your clothes. There was also a cot, extra blankets, iron, and ironing board.

The bathroom was very nice with a large jacuzzi tub and handheld showerhead. There were also some travel-size bottles of toiletries provided like shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.

B

The only thing I wish they had was extra toilet paper. The roll I had in the bathroom was already running low and I had to get toilet paper from one of the guest bathrooms near the living room.

I tried to just bring the roll of toilet paper with me, but I couldn’t figure out how to get it out of the holder, so I kept on tearing sheets from the roll and brought it into my room.

The innkeepers ask that you contact them if anything is needed, but I didn’t want to disturb them at 6 o’clock in the morning, so I just dealt with it.

AMENITIES

Like most traditional bed and breakfast inns, you can enjoy the shared space of the house at your leisure. The innkeepers lived in the same house where my room was, but I hardly ever saw them.

They keep pretty quiet on their side of the house, so I felt like I had the entire house to myself because I never ran into any other guests.

The first floor of the house has a living room with a piano and two dining areas with a bar. In the back of the house is the pool. The second floor has a billiards and game room with lots of board games to choose from.

There were some nostalgic games in there that I had not seen for awhile, so that was a lot of fun to see. This floor also has the cinema room with staged seating. They have an impressive library of DVDs you can choose from.

I loved the staged seating, but I do think the TV needs to be larger in this room. The third floor has an extra room that seemed like it was used just to relax in. As you walk up the stairs, you will come across many books as well.

Of course, breakfast comes with the stay as well and you will get a very hearty breakfast. My breakfast came with a bowl of mixed fruits, toast, eggs with cheese, two sausage patties, and potatoes.

I don’t have much of an appetite for breakfast, so I wasn’t able to eat everything. I really appreciated them cooking breakfast for me in the morning, but the meal was very average.

I actually couldn’t eat the eggs because it tasted like it was cooked in the microwave, which was disappointing since I love having eggs in the morning.

There is also a huge event site on the property so if there’s any kind of gathering you want to host, this will be a great place. They have a lot of weddings that happen here.

PET-FRIENDLINESS

Book Nook Inn is very pet friendly as they have an adorable labradoodle and a couple of cats themselves. Kuma got lots of attention and treats from David, so she was loving it.

There is lots of space for your dog to walk around outside and relieve themselves. Kuma enjoyed exploring the house indoors and the property outdoors. Just make sure to bring your own waste bags so you can pick up after them.

There is a pet fee, but it’s only $15.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Book Nook Inn is a lovely place if you want to escape the city life and just relax. For me, it didn’t really work out because Kuma did not let me sleep.

She wanted to go into the main area of the house so she could run into David or find some more food, so she was up pretty much the whole night and it did not work out for me.

The experience was unique and I loved meeting the owners and their dog, Harvey, but I learned my lesson that I cannot stay at a bed and breakfast with Kuma.
