How We Found Good and Affordable Travel Insurance with World Nomads

We'll admit that we used to never purchase traveler's insurance. It's always an option when purchasing a ticket, but we always declined. We never really thought about it until we were required to have traveler's insurance when we went to Cuba earlier this year.

There wasn't a go-to trusted traveler's insurance company that we knew of, so we decided to do a little digging and found that our credit cards provided travel insurance; however, it didn't cover everything we were looking for.  A common misconception is that your credit card company will cover everything for your travels, if something happened, but after reading the fine print this wasn't the case (at least with our credit cards).

So we were back to searching the web for insurance that covered more than sudden illness and accidental injuries. We were looking for traveler's insurance that also covered:

  • Trip cancellation

  • Trip interruptions

  • Lost or theft of our gear (ex: camera & laptop)

We knew what we wanted our insurance to cover us for, so the next question was, "Where and who offered these coverages?" After some hours of reading horrible reviews on almost every travel insurance company that was out there, we felt like there really wasn't one we would feel 100% comfortable with. We were basically at a point where it didn't matter which company we went with, but we decided to ask around in travel groups (there are many travel groups on Facebook) to see if there was one that stood out amongst the others. The overwhelming response we got from the groups was "World Nomads".

With all the rave reviews, we were worried that we wouldn't be able to afford it. Sometimes great reviews come at a cost, but to our surprise, they were actually very reasonably priced. Not only was World Nomads affordable, but their coverage offered more than the other insurance companies we were looking at. And the best part was that their site was very easy to navigate and it explained everything in the simplest terms. We loathe navigating insurance sites that make finding information so difficult. It's almost as if they don't want you to find the information you want.

OUR WORLD NOMAD'S QUOTE FOR CUBA

After researching and reading many positive reviews from fellow travel bloggers, we purchased World Nomad's travel insurance for our first trip to Cuba. Our trip to Cuba was for an extended weekend and our policy cost us less than $100 each. Once we made the purchase, we received an email explaining our coverage and when it would start. We also received reminder emails before, during, and after our trip.

Our trip to Cuba was amazing and luckily we didn't have to file any claims, but having that peace of mind was worth it. Since we were pleased with our first experience with World Nomads, we purchased from them again when we went to Costa Rica. Our trip to Costa Rica was for five days and the policy we purchased was less than $100 each on this trip as well. Once again, we were fortunate and didn't have to file any claims.

I know, I know, you may be thinking we are happy customers because we didn't have to file any claims. We actually asked other travel bloggers who have had to file claims and here is Samantha's detailed experience from "Carry On, or Bust". Paige from For the Love of Wanderlust also had to file a couple of claims, one being an emergency surgery in Thailand! Both times World Nomads took care of her and filed her claims with no hassle.

If we ever have to file a claim, we'll be sure to update this post and share our experience with you. But for now, we are happy to say that we were pleased with our experience with World Nomads. Here are some of the main reasons why we decided to go with them:

* You can purchase and review your insurance policy online
* They have great customer feedback
* They provide coverage at a fair price
* They are endorsed by Lonely Planet & National Geographic

When we were younger, we didn't ever think to purchase travel insurance. Now that we are older and also travel with our cameras and other electronic devices, we don't want to take the risk of not having coverage.

Do you purchase traveler's insurance? Have you ever filed a claim? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
